“If there is no blue, no green”

As part of Ocean Day Celebration, an awareness class on ‘ MICROPLASTICS AND MARINE ECOSYSTEM’ was organized by the Department of Science on Friday, June 9th,2023 for Grade 8 students.

The resource person of the event,a proud Peterian Alumnus, Mr. Rohan R ( Researcher, Naturalist & Wildlife Enthusiast), highlighted the alarming issue of microplastics and its detrimental impact on marine life and ecosystem.

Slide presentation on the visible impacts of plastic debris causing suffocation, ingestion problems and entanglement of hundreds of marine species was thought-provoking. The students were shocked to learn about the extent of damage caused by ghost gears and plastic wastes on ocean flora and fauna. The talk elaborated on the various measures undertaken by the NGOs and other agencies in minimizing the plastic input into the marine ecosystem, the approaches being – collect and reuse of plastic fragments, stop producing and finding alternatives for plastic products .

Grabbing the gravity of the situation, the session was concluded with a pledge by the students to reduce their plastic usage and disseminate the message of keeping the oceans, our lifelines, pristine.
